have my cake & eat it too!

Andy insisted that we buy Henry a cake for his actual birthday day. So off we went to Albertsons. I suggested a $0.69 cupcake. "No, Jeannett! It's his birthday! He needs a CAKE." Ok, fine. So, a cake it was. And we HAD to not only put the candle on it, but it also had to be lit.

Then, we had to get him a toy too. Because it was his birthday...

Oh, and a giant ball too. I argued that this was overkill since he wasn't going to remember any of it anyway...and I got the you-are-the-wicked-witch-of-the-west look, so we got a giant ball too...

In other news, yesterday was our SIX year anniversary! (Notice how it gets a little lost in the shuffle???!!!) Andy and I agreed to not exchange gifts or go out on a "fancy" dinner date and buy some plants for the backyard instead...

We went swimming...This is what happens to daddy's shoes when you turn your back for ONE SECOND...And we went to Red Robin for dinner as a little family and then walked down to Sears to look at leaf blowers...
A perfect date.

love that andy is so insistent on things with henry!

was that a cookie on the tray while he was eating cake? trying to fatten the boy up?

i'm with you on not getting gifts for kids that won't remember, but then it does feel mean when you don't!

and that sounds like an awesome anniversary! really doesn't get better than that!

happy anniversary!

welcome to anniversary post-kids. isn't it great? i have a much easier time being stingy with Christmas gifts for the kids. birthdays are hard for me. we bought esther something kind of big and ridiculous--only ridiculous only because she's a little young, but i figure she'll grow into it. i'm glad andy insisted that henry get a gift. and balls are totally fun and not too much money.

No, Lindsey, that was actually a multi-grain cracker. His fave!

I totally felt like the stingiest mom in the world...but, I'm glad we did get him something...albeit both the ball and truck cost less than $10! So, that makes me feel good. We got him a gift that he LOVES, without being overly crazy about it. It's a hard balance...you don't want him to be the weird kid, from the weird family, but you also want to make sure that they don't get wrapped up in the gift part of it all...

Happy Birthday, Henry! Looks like he had a wonderful celebration, what with cake and pool time. :-)

He's exactly a week older than Ronin!

Wow! Leaf blowers...you guys know how to end an evening on a high ;) Love that you guys spent the time together as a family. Some anniversaries are just better that way. The plants are going to look great in your yard. Kids and gifts are hard! I have 4 and every birthday seems to be different. On some they get lots of gifts from us and on others not so much. However we are pretty strict about not buying gifts for them unless it is a birthday or Christmas. We don't do impromptu toy buying whenever we go to target or something. With 4 kids that would get CRAZY! They get what they need and for everything else they just have to wait.
