I've been wanting to make one of these Family Rules canvases for a while now. I have the perfect place to hang it on a particularly empty wall above my kitchen table. I finally went to the craft store, bought all of the supplies, and I'm sitting down to get started on it...
Nicole did a great job of coming up with rules, and while I don't want to copy her every detail (although it's tempting!), I want to be sure to incorporate things specific to OUR family...
So, I'm trying to hone down the rules I want to include before I go finishing it up.
Here's what I got so far:
1. Obey Your Parents
2. Be kind always
3. Sing silly, dance crazy, hug often, snuggle much, say I love you
4. Forgiveness is mandatory
5. Have fun, ask first, no fussing, no whining
6. Always tell the truth
7. Encourage your siblings…share in their joy
8. Husband hug your wife daily & wife always be on his side
9. Never follow an apology with a but…
10. Keep your promises
11. Use your manners – yes, please, thank you
12. Always give to others first
13. Too much TV is bad…too much reading is good
14. Use nice words…ignore dirty ones
15. Bless your food, be grateful, eat together, clean up after yourself
16. There is no such thing as “mine” in this house…it is all God’s
17. Say your prayers…thank God for this family
What would YOUR family rules be? (Maybe I can steal a couple of yours!)

so the lady I'm living with has family rules posted on her refrigerator for her kindergartner. Yesterday she added "Do not chase cute little boys and DO NOT kiss them!!" I guess little lexi got in trouble for that at school :)
I read a great parenting book on family dynamics that talked a lot about obedience being an act of will while honor is an act of heart. You can obey with a bad attitude, but to honor your parents and siblings you are doing it out of love. I've started to incorporate it in here and there. "Mommy needs you to pick up your Barbie's (obey) and then I would like you to surprise me with one more thing (honor). It's been fun to see what happens. Last night I demanded (obey) that the train, Barbie's, and baby stuff be picked up before anything else was played with. Aubrey surprised me by doing that and then going into the playroom and cleaning it. All that to say "Honor each other" may be a nice addition.
lets see...can I copy the whole idea from you a Nicole. I love it. What an awesome idea!
can you make me one while you are at it? it has been on my "I really want to make this" list forever.
kaythanksbye.
I love this! How big is your canvas? Did you freehand your rules? I want to start one but I'm not sure where to start! Great job, though!!
Jenn-
My canvas is 24x36. I happen to own a tracer/projector thing so I used it. But, some people will freehand the lettering using the rules printed out in different fonts for a guide OR you can try feeding the strips of paper through your printer and then going back over the type with a marker to give it a more "organic" feel. I just cut my 12x12 scrapbook paper in half and then arrange it...so there is a lot of "wasted" paper underneath the other sheets. I didn't want to have to sit and measure and do math to make sure all of my strips added up to the right size. You can see more examples by checking out the comments on www.lindseycheney.blogspot.com. That's where I got the initial idea! Good Luck!
These are great! I'm trying to come up with our own!
