Henry Luke

So here's a strange observation I've made:

Everyone seems to refer to my son as Henry Luke. Yes, that's his name, I know, I'm his mother...I picked it. It's a very nice name if I do say so myself. But here's the thing: while I totally don't care that people refer to him by his first AND middle name, I find it a little odd. I mean, I don't introduce him as such, so it's a little weird. I've noticed it in a variety of places. I'll get emails or phone calls from people asking how Henry Luke is doing, I've noticed some of my blogging friends will type out both names, etc. But it especially struck me today when I went onto the Grace Church database. There, if you type in Gibson, up comes our little family...Andy (Head), Jeannett (Spouse), Henry Luke (Child). Curious if this was a new thing, I searched the names of some of the other recently born babies and only their first names are listed. It just says Silas Cheney. Not Silas Ryan Cheney. Just odd. Not a big deal, it's just interesting. I wonder why?

I complain that Henry (Luke!) takes a Paci, but I'm beginning to wish I would have just kept my big mouth shut. The last week he's been spitting out his Paci...so that he can stick his thumb in his mouth instead! Ugh! At least with the Paci, I can throw it away...I can't cut off his thumb! And tell me Becky, isn't it worse for his teeth??? This is how I found him at nap time today...

Oh no worries Jeannett. HENRY (notice no middle name) is just taking after his favorite Great Aunt Peggy. Tess sucked her two middle fingers of her right hand and one day it just stopped. One day, when he stops, you probably won't even notice it and then you will miss it. That is what happened to us--we just noticed one day that Tess had not had those fingers in her mouth for awhile and then we were very sad! Life flies by--enjoy every second with him and NO WORRIES!

Love you all,
(the former thumb sucking)
Great Aunt Peggy ;)

Well, start saving for braces. =) On the bright side you won't be frantically running around the house, crawling under ever piece of furniture looking for the missing pacifiers before every nap and bedtime for the next two years. *sigh*

anna's a thumb sucker and honestly there are enough mommy things for me to worry about without wondering what it'll do to her teeth. i'm glad she's able to self-pacify and it's just not something i can control, so i'm rolling with it. (i figure, most kids end up needing braces anyhow! :))

interesting about the first/middle name combo! i always just call him henry, but henry luke has such a nice ring to it too!

Henry looks so cute sucking his thumb! Dillon sucked his thumb for about a week, then tried his two middle fingers and then went back to his paci.

On the subject of Henry being known as Henry Luke, maybe people assume it's that because that's what you call him on your profile? Either way - they are both great names!

So from a purely dental view, yes a paci is better, because you can take it away. (Not to mention yucky gems from finger his mouth.) Does the average kid need braces? Yes. Will Henry? I don't know. Typically the longer kids suck on their fingers or use a paci.. (ok, they are like 4-5 years old) the more likely they will actually change their upper palate. Will it kill them? No. At least he's not alone! (dental beck, former thumb sucker, many years of braces.)

I've heard that thumbs and paci's are only troublesome after year two.

Peggy sucked her thumb and did not have braces - I didn't and had braces for over 3 years! Go figure. Andy and Duncan both had braces, and only Duncan sucked his two middle fingers like Tess - for a long time past age 2. Genetics is a weird thing! I think you should be happy he can soothe himself. Not to mention how cute he looks in those pics!

Love you all - Grandma/Mom
