Andy's out of town on a business trip until late Saturday, so I just know I'm going to be bored out of my skull. The house seems awful quiet when he's not here. But, I'll just have to be a trooper and tough it out. So, I'll solace myself with my blog.
I fear this poor kid will never have a name. Andy and I never discussed names previous to knowing the sex, using the excuse that we would wait to know if it was a boy or a girl. So, now we know. It's a boy. And still, no name. Let me clarify that even if we DID have a name, we wouldn't share it. It'd be a surprise until the birth. Our friends the Heldts did this recently with their latest little girl, and it was so fun to get that text message saying "Kaitlyn Jane was born at..." So, we decided to be copy cats and do the same. (Shameless, I know).
But, sadly, I'm not just keeping an elaborate secret. We can't seem to think of anything that is "it". Boy names are kind of boring. Girl names are easy, they're so pretty and feminine and have a nice ring to them...almost sing-song. Boys names are much more difficult. The ones that have a nice ring to them, are also not very manly. We want a traditional, guy's guy kind of name. Like Butch, only not Butch. Anything "pretty" or trendy or poetic is a definite no. So, no Tristan's, no Kyle's...pretty much nothing that you would find in the latest top 10 lists. Not because they're bad names, just not what we're going for. There are some names we like, some names we definetely don't like, and others that are kinda "eh". I told Andy the other night that we have to name this kid. I almost wonder if we'll end up just waiting until he makes his grand debut to pick a name. Not on purpose (remember, I'm a control freak and I hate waiting until the last minute for anything) but because I have a feeling that's just what's going to happen. A name is such an important thing. It's a daunting task. I mean, this is what people are going to call him forever...so it better be good.
By the way, any of you wonder how come Andy never posts on this blog??? Yeah, me too. I keep bugging him to blog something...anything...it's his son's blog after all, but he won't do it. Weird, he's never been the shy type before!

1. I think it's a great idea to wait to tell people the name choice. You end up with a lot of "oh. I didn't think you would pick that name." and nonsense.
2. If you wait, you can actually see his little face and find a name that suits his look. You hardly think the name Thor with a small fair kid.
3. I like old world traditional names, too. I think it's a good choice. Maybe since I couldn't use Oliver, you could :)
4. Does Gibby think he's too good to write a blog? Is he above this nonsense? Get him blogging!! I'd love to hear from that goober once in a while.
5. I'm procrastinating cleaning the house right now.
XooX
Jared, Caleb, and Luke. They are my favorite boy names and I can't use them because I am related to all three of them (my nephews and brother). But you're not. They are all biblical and solidly masculine.
I also have a bunch of websites I went to when we were looking for a name for Caedra. Here's one:

Have fun! We didn't choose Caedra's name until about two weeks before she came.
What happened to Henry? I believe it was Kate Hasson's baby shower for Suzannah that you said you wanted to name your baby boy Henry (or was it Harry?) if you every had one.
Lara! My word! I am impressed! That baby shower was 2+ years ago! Yes, we do like Henry, but now that the baby is upon us, you kinda do a half step back and wonder if you REALLY like it enough to actually name your kid that, you know?
I love the idea of keeping the name a secret until the baby is born! We did that with Shannon and it was so fun after she was born to say "Shannon is here!" and get all the fun responses. Plus, we didn't get any unwanted negative feedback on our name choice that way - people don't feel as free to dog on the name you've chosen after the baby is already officially born and named.
Our plan to keep Shawn's name a secret until he was born didn't work, since apparently after Shannon's birth I had told several people (who have a great memory like Lara) that if Shannon had been a boy that we would have named her Shawn. As soon as we told that we were having a boy the second time several people asked if his name was Shawn! So it wasn't as secret but it worked out fine anyway.
Good luck with the names!
Jeannett, I totally know what you mean. I had a whole list of great names that got thrown out as soon as I was actually having a real baby. For some reason it's quite different. Like you said, this is the name they are going to have for the rest of their lives. Once you're pregnant the reality of having to name a human being sets in. People had always just come with names before this moment and now you have to actually give the name. It's a weird thing.
If you're not irritated by all my suggestions yet, you could always use Henry as a middle name and call the kid John Henry, not just John or Johnny, but always John Henry. It's old fashioned.
I too remember Jeannett (who I didn't know at the time) talking about "Henry" at Kate's shower!
I know, names are tough, especially boy names for some reason. I'm so excited for this boy to be born and hear his name!
i'm one of those who just can't help sharing a name once we pick it because i'm so excited, so i'm sooo impressed with anyone who can get it a secret and think it's very fun to have a surprise!
names are hard, boy names especially. i feel like we'll have to come up with a lot of boy names! but right now we have to come up with a girl name. and since we actually have a picture of her, i think it's even harder! (yes, we are planning on giving dulce a new name. maybe i'll blog about all of that).
no advice here. sorry. on a side note, i'm so sorry you are all alone. i hate it when mike's gone, and fortunately that doesn't happen much. feel free to pop up to a-town anytime. it's just a quick drive, right?! go bug brianna and kevin. i'm sure they won't mind. they might even give you a few diapers to change. :)
We had decided to keep the name to ourseves too. But my husband forgot... and then decided we needed to tell our parents on Christmas... and then all of his co-workers... and any stranger he met... and finally on one of his few posts he slipped it right in there.
Actually Kristen, Jeannett brought over this SUPER yummy dessert last night for growth group and dropped it off! (Missed you Jeannett, hope your meeting went well.)
Was it good? Seriously, be honest. I saw the recipe in one of those Sunset magazines and thought I'd try it...although I have no idea if it was all that great. I'd hate to keep it in my recipe box if it's only mediocre...
Jeannett it was great! I loved it b/c I love strawberries and it wasn't sickeningly sweet. I think it's a keeper.
